There is something for everyone in this book. First, there’s the acknowledgment that living with diabetes day in and, day out, year in, year out, birthdays, anniversaries, Thanksgiving, Christmas and St. Swithin’s Day can be a real drag – that diabetes burnout is real. There are discussions of everyday challenges for type 1, type 2 and (a new one on me) type 1.5 diabetics, including avoiding regular monitoring of blood sugar “because you don’t freakin’ want to.”
There are questions you should ask your doctor. There are even questions your doctor should ask you! In sections called “What Others Have to Say,” you’ll find commentary from experts, diabetes educators, athletes and writers who just want to “talk” with the reader about the realities of life. The book also features sporadic workbook sections for readers to answer questions, examine their own behaviors and set realistic goals. You’ll learn not to beat yourself up when you falter, how to get back up on that horse and stay there with confidence, as well as how to deal with well-intentioned loved ones and not-so-well-intentioned acquaintances.
But all through this book, the one thing that you’ll find the most engaging is the personality of Ginger Vieira. As someone living with type 1 diabetes, celiac disease and fibromyalgia, her chatty style and sense of humor serve her well, both as author of this book and as editorial director of DiabetesDaily.com. Chapter by chapter, you’ll get to know her and find a kindred spirit in this lifelong journey. At the end, she’ll be someone you’d want to meet for coffee (no sugar!). After all, you gotta love anyone who includes a chapter entitled, “Yes, I Ate 17 Cookies, So Sue Me!”
