I have been a bit out of the loop for the past week or so getting ready for my competition as well as my trip to Paris and Amsterdam. I honestly don't know how I got through it, but I came out alive and still ready to get on that stage in T-8 days.
For those of you who are new to following me, I am a type 1 diabetic on a mission to control my blood sugars through my best solution yet: competition training. The diet and the fitness program (combining both strength and cardio exercises) have exceeded my health expectations and have brought my A1C levels to almost perfect from the 12's and 9's.
This trip signified my oldest sister graduating with her Masters Degree in Education and my youngest sister's high school graduation; it was a celebratory trip for them and I got to tag along :) But it was just that: celebratory.
Now, I have been in competition mode for quite some time. I started in November 2012 for an April 2013 show, where I really cracked down on my diet and eliminated dairy and most whole grains (cannot wait to post about the book I have been reading) along with alcohol. You could say that I have gotten used to drinking club soda's and eating salads with plain chicken on them, but going to Paris, a land filled with butter and cheese along with Amsterdam, a land full of more cheese and fried potatoes everywhere you look with your family members whom you are with 24/7 and watching them enjoy all of these foods and drinking delicious wine's from Bordeux and mouth watering Duvel's by the bottle... that was hard. What would have been harder? Ruining all of my hard work. I have mentioned before about feeling ashamed when it comes to elevated blood sugar levels. If I were to throw my blood sugar to the wind while I ate bread, croissont, nutella, doner kebap, gellato, bitterballen' I would have felt the guilt, because I would have put the stress on my own body. I, however, refrained from said guilt and stuck to my strict guidelines while traveling abroad.
I documented a few of my meals and workouts along the way to show that it can be done! You can stick to anything you put your mind to. Just make sure you can communicate your needs and wants and totally throw out the diabetic card once in a while, because the restaurant staff will freak out about perfecting your food :) I had to order EVERYTHING no oil/no butter/no wheat/no sugar. Granted, they had to use some oil at times, but they were accommodating, friendly and all I had to do was ask.
Home now for peak week, and it's off to Miami for Fitness Universe! This is where all of my hard work and dedication pays off, folks! I hope that you have all found something to keep you and your diabetes in its best form. If you haven't yet, that's ok too. That's what we are here for.
