So this morning I got up to start my day with a nice warm shower, I have some Kansas City Type One Diabetes Foundation business to do today, and while in the shower I saw on the floor a used infusion set. I thought to myself... ok well Aly forgot to throw it away last night in our mad dash to change her site that came out and needing to leave I will need to pick that up when I get out and throw it away. Well I am one that enjoys a nice long shower, I got out and let’s just say that I picked up the infusion set totally NOT the way that I had originally attended!! Can you guess how it got picked up? If you guessed that I forgot about it and stepped on it with that tiny little needle shooting into my foot … well then you would be correct. Let me just say OUCH!
When this occurred I sat there are was slightly perturbed for a moment and then I remember that Aly and all other people out there living with Type 1 Diabetes have to go through this pain daily/multiple times a day between all the finger pokes for blood sugar checks, shots for insulin infusion, infusion set changes, and every other poke and prod that they have to deal with.
All I can say is that I have to give them all props! I know me stepping on one randomly was painful but I cannot imagine having to do that to myself all the time even knowing it kept me alive.
Now don’t get me wrong Aly and I will be discussing the neglect of her putting her used infusion set on the ground instead of the trash because if it had been anyone else but me that could be a BAD situation but it sure did make me think.
