About Christie Leist

Christie is a firm believer in glasses that are half full. When she was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 17, heading into her senior year of high school, that belief system was put to the test. It was a dramatic entry into the world of type 1.Going into diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) was a terrifying experience for Christie and her family. However; the more they learned about her condition, the more she realized that she'd still be able to live the same full life she was planning—in spite of her T1D diagnosis—and the glass was half full once again.

Normalizing the conversation around diabetes became a personal mission of Christie’s when she attended Boston University. In college, she felt uncomfortable explaining why she had to give herself injections in the dining hall and why she needed a juice box in the middle of a test. This all changed when she met classmate and fellow type 1, Emily Goldman.

It was a relief to meet a pancreatically-challenged friend her own age. They started sharing ideas, tips and overcoming diabetic struggles together. It wasn’t long before they realized their candid conversations might be helpful to others. And their podcast, Pancreas Pals, was born.
