Finding Peace of Mind

While peace of mind may not seem like something that's specifically related to diabetes, your peace of mind has a very direct impact on your health at all levels. 

Peace of Mind Is Peace of Body

When your mind is not at peace, when you're restless and unhappy, how does that frame of mind affect your health? If you're feeling ill at ease in your life, does your body respond in kind? 

It may be easy to compartmentalize our physical health from our mental health and emotional well-being, but there is an increasing amount of solid scientific evidence that the mind and body are intricately connected in ways that we are yet to fully comprehend. 

Stress and Diabetes

It's a known fact that stress can wreak havoc with your diabetes. When you're stressed or upset, your body will respond by raising the blood levels of stress hormones like cortisol and epinephrine, and when these levels rise, your blood sugar rises with them.

When under stress, your body responds as if under attack, and like the body of the Neanderthal who is threatened by a saber-toothed tiger, the fight or flight response in your system will seek to have a greater supply of glucose on hand to enable you to run away from the imminent threat to your safety. 

In the 21st century, there aren't many saber-toothed tigers, but taxes and finances, illness, relationships, work, education, and raising children are enough to make us feel under attack, and chronic stress can lead to chronic cellular inflammation, and all manner of disease states. 

Seeking Peace of Mind

Some people seek peace of mind through meditation, yoga, religion, prayer, nature, exercise, art, music, poetry, or any other pursuit that brings a sense of well-being. Mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) is a scientifically proven method for reducing stress and getting it under control, and there are many other modalities, as well, including hypnotherapy, acupuncture and Chinese Medicine, Ayurvedic Medicine, relaxation techniques, and so much more.

Whether you use a formal technique like meditation, or an informal technique like exercise or reading poetry, controlling stress and seeking peace of mind are key to good health.

Seek peace of mind, and you will also be seeking peace of body simultaneously.
