Spring Has Sprung

Back in February, I wrote a post entitled "Spring is Coming", and while I may have jumped the gun on that one, you can imagine that I was just excited at the prospect of the winter coming to an end. Today in Santa Fe, it's in the 40s, with wind and rain rolling over the mountains, and while we're grateful for the rain, the slow arrival of spring has many of us ready to move elsewhere.

Having said that, I don't live in Minnesota, where the snow continues to fall, so I should count my blessings that the New Mexican sun will eventually burn away the cold and clouds, and we'll be back to our regularly scheduled spring beauty and relative warmth.

But I digress.

What I really want to say is that, depending on where you live, spring has sprung, or it's certainly getting ready to---at least in this hemisphere (sorry to our Australian readers!). And with the coming of spring arrives the opportunity for personal renewal and change.

But What Do We Change in the Spring?

Well, some of us take our winter clothes, put them in storage, and the spring and summer clothing begins to take over the closet. And we ask ourselves, "Do my summer clothes fit?" If they do, that's great. If they don't, we have some work to do---or at least some shopping.

We can also embrace this time of year as a period for changing our habits, including our habits of eating and exercise. The winter can drive us to eat more carbs and put on a few pounds, and many of us find exercising in winter to be quite the uphill battle. So, our diet and workout routine is ripe for change, just as the fruit ripens on the vine and the trees and flowers begin to bloom.

In springtime, we can also change our mind. This may be a change in outlook, a change in our attitude, or a change in the ways in which we approach our health, be it the mental, physical, emotional or spiritual aspects therein.

Spring is a time of change and new growth, and we can use this moment to examine our lives and decide on a new course, a new direction, the chance for something novel and exciting.

Change Your Mind

Change begins in the mind, and don't let anyone convince you otherwise. If your exercise routine changes, it begins in your mind first. Where your diet and nutrition are concerned, change again happens in the mind. If you want to change your mind, even then your mind must decide it wants to change. It happens above the neck, and then the body follows suit---if the spirit is willing.

With the coming of spring, poets and writers and songwriters have always told us that newness is ours for the taking. New love, new life---it all can happen with the possibilities delivered by the blooming of the season that follows winter. And it all starts in the mind, or perhaps also in the heart.

Spring Forward

Spring forward into newness. Spring forward into change. Spring forward into improvement and betterment. Spring forward, and don't look back.
