Christmas is a-Coming and the Cat is Getting Fat!

My cat is eating everything in sight. He’s trying to get fat for the winter, such as it is in Southern California.  He wants to puff up and stay warm. And cozy. And comforted. I know exactly how he feels.

fat catThe difference between the cat and me is that he doesn’t have to work so hard to keep his weight in check (since I’m the one who feeds him!) and his blood sugar under control (for him, the c in A1c stands for Cat!). I, on the other hand, fight this fight 365 days a year.

I pride myself in trying to eat healthy and, therefore, I strive to serve healthy meals to my family and friends.  Little tricks, like draining the heavy syrup from the Thanksgiving yams and replacing it with a splash of orange juice. Leaving off the butter from the stuffing recipe. Nobody missed it. 

I wish I had taken a picture of the pumpkin pie slice I cut for myself. As I often say – and have said before in this blog—if the best bite of a treat is the first bite, and the second best bite is the last bite, then two bites oughta do it! Well, since everything I eat these days is in very small bites, the slice actually took three little bites to get down.  It was delicious…so good, in fact, that I sent the rest of the pie home with my sister-in-law! 

I am fortunate to have people helping me through my health-related journey who are professionals in their field. Smart. Able. Patient – especially with me. She offers a few things to remember during this dangerous, daunting, delicious time of year:

During this holiday of abundance and family, take a minute to remind yourself that...

  • Food takes care of your hunger, is fuel and is pleasure.
  • You can leave food on your plate, save it or throw it away.
  • There are many good rewards other than food.The emptiness or joy inside of you is emotional and can't be satisfied with food.

I recently had a surgical procedure that limits the amount of food that I can eat.  While it hasn’t changed what I would actually LIKE to eat, it doesn’t allow me to eat much.  So since I have become extremely selective, it has gotten me to think about what I would really like to eat—that would make me feel good.

At the same time, it has taught me the difference between not being hungry and being full. And, during this particular season, we can add being stuffed to the gills to that list.  Well, stuffed is no longer in my vocabulary, but full sure is! I do my best not to get to that point. I eat slowly, I enjoy the conversation at the table, I put my fork down between bites. I quit before the elastic on my yoga pants has something to say about it.  (No, I don’t do yoga…but I now look great in those pants!)

My Personal Holiday Survival Tips

So here are a few tips of my own that I’ve picked up along the way.  Hopefully, they’ll remind us how to survive the rest of the holiday season.

  • Enjoy social gatherings, but never show up hungry!  Having a little bite before you leave home will be your secret weapon for staying in control.
  • Never stick your hand in a bag or bowl of ANYTHING!  Take a chip or two, or a cracker or two, but avoid that mindless eating!
  • See if you can get through the whole event without one bite of forbidden, diabetes-unfriendly sweets.  You’d be surprised how the pride you feel after you get home erases any feeling of deprivation you may have felt.
