Study highlights the growing prevalence of type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes worldwide

Some individuals with type 1 diabetes or type 2 diabetes are the only members of their family or group of friends who have the condition.

While these people may feel like they are the only ones affected by the disease, they are among 350 million others worldwide who have either type 1 diabetes or type 2 diabetes.

A recent study published in the journal The Lancet found that the prevalence of diabetes has more than doubled since 1980.

The researchers explained that cases of the disease have either increased or remained stable in all areas of the world.

The study's results showed that 70 percent of the rise in diabetes diagnoses was attributed to the growing and aging population.

"Our study has shown that diabetes is becoming more common almost everywhere in the world. This is in contrast to blood pressure and cholesterol, which have both fallen in many regions. Diabetes is much harder to prevent and treat than these other conditions," said researcher Majid Ezzati.

New diabetes cases were found to be especially prevalent in the Pacific Island nations. For example, one out of every three women and one-quarter of men in the Marshall Islands have type 1 diabetes or type 2 diabetes.

More than 160 million individuals with the chronic condition live in either China, India, Russia or the U.S., the findings showed.

Many physicians tell their patients who have type 1 diabetes or type 2 diabetes that they need to practice diligent diabetes management in order to reduce their risk of serious health complications such as kidney damage, blindness or amputation.

While a well-balanced diabetic diet is key to sustaining healthy blood sugar levels, exercise should also be a component in any diabetes management program.

According to the Mayo Clinic, regular physical activity may improve insulin resistance in some people with type 1 diabetes or type 2 diabetes. Furthermore, the organization states that even low-intensity exercise, such as cleaning or gardening, may help reduce blood sugar levels.
