Event shows type 2 diabetics don't have to sacrifice taste in their food

A type 2 diabetes diagnosis often means that individuals will need to change a number of things about their life. They are often advised to get more exercise and eat a healthier diet in order to improve their ability to control their blood sugar. However, this does not necessarily mean that a person needs to forsake everything that tastes good.

In order to showcase this, actors Paul and Mira Sorvino recently hosted the Diabetes Co-Star: Cook-Off event, which challenged participants from across the county to produce their favorite diabetes-friendly dishes.

Paul Sorvino has type 2 diabetes, and he said it has been a challenge to eat the way he knows he should. However, the fact that there are some dishes out there that appeal to a person's taste buds while not completely ruining a diet has made things a lot easier.



"I've always been a chef, but when I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes I had to change the way I cooked," he said. "The Diabetes Co-Stars: Cook-Off proves that you don't have to sacrifice taste in order to make meals diabetes-friendly."

Hidemi Walsh of Plainfield, Indiana took home first prize in the competition for her soymilk cream pie dessert. She said she was inspired to start creating meals and desserts that allow diabetics to stick to their diets after her husband was diagnosed with the condition. Since then they have enjoyed creating dishes together.

The event served to highlight the fact that a person with type 2 diabetes does not need to go through the rest of their life without eating tasty foods. There are number of options that won't harm a diet while still offering a pleasant taste. Looking for baked goods that are low in carbs and sugar may be one option.
